Narelle is a multi award-winning artist with a background in education. Encouraging children through a hands-on approach to express themselves through colour, line, texture and form lead her to using various techniques within each piece of work. Narelle loves nature's design in everyday objects, exploring the complexities of texture, light, shade and reflection whilst blending and layering colours with glaze in an abstract style. The ambiguous nature of her subjects manipulate the perspectives of detail and obscurity. Narelle holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education majoring in Art, and a Bachelor of Education. She completed The Extraordinary Mind Project portrait drawing classes and has been a master class student in the Freedom School with David Giiles. ARTIST'S STATEMENT My work depicts images as they appear in life. The subject matter of my current body of work is Australian Plants, usually portrayed as black and white images on coloured backgrounds. The less traditional look of these botanical studies is achieved by using large scale canvasses and brightly coloured backgrounds. My works are multimedia pieces.  I draw with liquid graphite and black acrylic ink. I then ‘shade’ the images with graphite and conté. Around these images of plants I paint flat colour. This homage to the original botanical artists of Australia honours their decision to present plants out of context. The art is about the plants, not their setting. My art is about coming to terms with how something . . . Read More

Artist Statement: Art has always been a passion of mine and developed in my early 20’s.  However a busy professional career and raising a family temporarily put this on hold, until I made the decision to make time available again, initially as a form of relaxation, and a place to escape and work on creating something which was truly a part of me. Over the next few years I attended many classes and workshops, to reignite my skills and see what was new in the world of Art. I worked with various teachers, and completed many workshops to get a feel for styles and techniques and to experiment as I progressed with a passion and time, to develop my art. They have all . . . An article written by multi award winning artist David Giles: Carol Hazel is committed to the practice of painting. From realistic landscapes to contemporary abstract her works take us on journeys to explore what paint can do. A preoccupation with water echoes the longing to live and be, besides the water. With Hazel’s work we are taken there, and then some more, as we are pulled into the pictures which evoke feelings, memories and longings deeper and beyond the mere appearance of things. As we engage with Hazel’s paintings we become embroiled in a deeper level of reality as we are led into an engagement with the mark making and painterliness that Hazel puts into her works, sometimes subtle and nuanced sometimes fresh . . . My paintings float freely between representational and abstract. The colours, texture, and techique reflect the emotions assocated with each art piece. My abstract paintings are impulsive and intuitive. I work directly onto the canvas without prelimary drawings or studies. This accounts for the freshness and immediacy in this artwork. In my representational paintings, I start with preliminary drawings and studies. Once the initial image is created on the canvas, I allow my intuition to freely guide the direction the piece takes. The passion to be creative is what motivates me to be an artist. Art is my passion and has enhanced my life in so many positive ways. My work takes inspiration from the natural beauty of nature and life, landscapes and the human form and experimenting with abstract forms using mixed media. Painting has given me the wonderful avenue to express myself and capture the many aspects of life which I love to portray on canvas. I enjoy capturing the light on a subject matter, using mother nature to portray a range of lighting effects which both excit and influence me. From the moment of conceiving an idea to finishing each work is the culmination of much satisfaction and enjoyment. My chosen medium is oil and acrylic, I also enjoy sketching. . . . Read More

I have been creating works of art for as long as I can remember. I grew up on a cattle station west of Esperance, so we were rather isolated. During school holidays we used to spend a lot of time drawing, painting, sewing and all things creative and crafty. I can remember painting picture for the other children on the station.   When I went to high school I was lucky enough to have some fabulous art teachers who taught us so much in the short time we had at school. I came back to painting after my eldest son was born and have been in the studio creating and experimenting since! Over the years I have been to various workshops and classes . . . Read More

Born in Subiaco, Perth, Andrew Brown developed his interest in the visual Arts from a young age, drawing inspiration from illustrated encyclopaedias, nature and his immediate gold mining environment in the Goldfields of  Western Australia where he spent most of his childhood. In 1978, he was enrolled in a water colour painting course held in Boulder by the artist Walter Terrell. Devoloping his own romantic representational painting style, his paintings were sold to both local Kalgoorlie citizens and to tourists looking for representations of local landmarks such as goldmine headframes and rustic buildings. Many of the historic mining structures were being ‘progressively’ demolished as part of the expansion of open pit mining around the Kalgoorlie-Boulder area during the mid 80's.
